When the sciatic nerve (the largest in the human body) becomes irritated due to tight and tense back muscles, cartilage wear, muscle spasms, or spinal injury
it transmits pain that radiates through the hips, down to the buttock area and into the legs, on one or both sides of the body.
Why does this happen? Because the sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body, the pain doesn’t just stop at the buttock or hip… it can continue to “travel” along the entire leg.
In fact, the sciatic nerve splits below the knee into two main branches that reach all the way to the tips of the toes.
Therefore, when there’s pressure at the point of origin (in the lower back), the “current” will pass along this entire nerve “cable”.
Important note: If you feel weakness in the foot (difficulty lifting the toes or “foot drop”) or loss of bladder/bowel control and significant loss of sensation, this is a sign that the pressure on the nerve is severe and you should get checked as soon as possible.
